We are currently looking for a Transport Physician at our Winnipeg Base.

Anticipated Time Commitment: 48 hours/month (on-call and base/flying time)

Position Summary
The Transport Physician reports to the STARS Winnipeg Medical Director and works with a team of highly skilled medical providers specializing in the care of critically ill and injured patients. 

Key Areas of Involvement
The Transport Physician will be an acute care practitioner (emergency medicine, anesthesia, ICU, trauma surgery) who will work with a Registered Flight Nurse and Critical Care Paramedic, either in person or on-line, to provide high quality care and service including triage, intervention, and safe transport of critically ill or injured patients of all ages from the scene of injury or during inter-facility transfer.  This service is provided twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.

Requirements of the Transport Physician Role:
  • STARS Winnipeg Transport Physicians facilitate Critical Care Patient Transfers across Manitoba both via remote consult and/or by physically attending the patient;
  • STARS Transport Physicians are required to provide a minimum 48 hours of on-call time/month;  
  • On-call can be remote; however, whilst on call the TP must be within 25 minutes of Winnipeg International Airport and be ready with flight suit, boots and requisite gear; 
  • All TPs must have access to Shared Health EPR and be available by cell phone while on call or at base;
  • Undertake additional duties as required (Educational Rounds presentations, On-Base Days, attend TP Meetings and updates);
  • TPs periodically will need to travel on fixed wing flights and in ground ambulances to aid in critical care patient transfers;
  • TPs will be required to participate in a process of performance review at regular intervals as a means of supporting continuing learning and effectiveness in the role.           
Qualifications & Required Experience: 
  • Be an acute care physician in Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, ICU, or Trauma Surgery;
  • Possess an active certificate of registration for independent practice in Manitoba and be in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba;
  • Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada;
  • Understand Manitoba’s critical care transport system;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to quality and quality improvement;
  • Have a thorough knowledge of current and new/emerging guidelines and standards for critical care transport and pre-hospital medicine;
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Have a demonstrated track record of leading high acuity teams.
As this position has been identified as safety sensitive, employment of the preferred candidate will be conditional upon successful completion of required pre-employment alcohol and drug assessment.
